In a composition, an indentation is a space between a margin and the start of a line of text.
The start of this paragraph is indented. Basic paragraph indentation is about five spaces or one-quarter to half an inch, varying on which style guide you follow. If your software doesn’t allow indentation in online writing, insert a line space to indicate a new paragraph.
The opposite of first-line indentation is a presentation called hanging indentation. All the lines of a paragraph or entry are indented in a hanging indent except the first line. Examples of this type of indentation are found in résumés, outlines, bibliographies, glossaries, and indexes.
