My 7-year-old watched ‘The Sandlot’—and now we’re a baseball family
Let’s be honest, I never thought I’d be the kind of parent who lived and breathed baseball. I mean, I knew the basics – home runs, strikes, that whole shebang – but my knowledge stopped there. My idea of a perfect summer afternoon involved a good book and a glass of iced tea, not cheering on a team in the blazing sun.
But then, my 7-year-old, Liam, discovered “The Sandlot.” It started innocently enough, a movie night suggestion, a nostalgic trip back to my childhood. And then, it happened. The magic of the film, the camaraderie, the simple joy of a game played for the love of it, it all seeped into our home like a warm summer breeze.
Suddenly, baseball wasn’t just a sport, it was a gateway to a whole new world. Liam started asking questions, wanting to know everything about the game. He devoured stories of legendary players, studied the positions, and began mimicking the swing of Scotty Smalls with a makeshift bat and a tennis ball.
It wasn’t long before the entire family was caught in the baseball fever. We started throwing the ball around the backyard, learning the rules, and even attempting to recreate the iconic scenes from “The Sandlot.” My husband, who previously thought “baseball was boring,” found himself caught up in the excitement, eagerly teaching Liam the art of catching a fly ball.
Our living room became a makeshift baseball stadium, with Liam and his friends engaging in intense, albeit slightly chaotic, games. We even ventured out to a local youth baseball league, where Liam, with his newfound passion, quickly fell in love with the game on a grander scale.
We’ve become a baseball family, and it’s been a wonderful journey. We’ve learned about teamwork, perseverance, and the joy of a good, old-fashioned game. The excitement of a home run, the thrill of a close play, and the camaraderie of the team have brought us closer together.
“The Sandlot” might have been just a movie, but it sparked a love for baseball in our family. It showed us that the simple act of playing a game can create lasting memories, forge strong bonds, and ignite a passion that can stay with you for a lifetime.
So, thank you, “The Sandlot,” for making our summer a home run. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have a little league game to watch.
