How to Renew or Reinstate a Teachers License in North Carolina
Renewal of Teaching Certification
After 3 years, you can upgrade your Standard Professional (SP1) Teaching License to an SP2. This license is good for 5 years. To renew it, you have to earn 7.5 renewal credits in:
- 1 renewal credit for literacy
- 1 renewal credit in your content area
- 5.5 renewal credits, as sanctioned by your Local Education Agency (LEA)
Activities that count for renewal credit include:
- Taking institution courses (provide transcript)
- Attendance at local workshops or in-services
- Classes/workshops sanctioned by your LEA
If you are employed in a district in North Carolina, the district will keep track of your renewal credits.
Finalize the License Update form. Attach official transcripts and Confirmation of K-12 Educator Experience form. Mail these materials your renewal fee of $55 to the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, Licensure Section, 6365 Mail Service Center, Raleigh, NC 27699-6365.
Teaching Certification Reinstatement
Has your North Carolina teaching license lapsed, and do you wish to reinstate it? To be eligible for reinstatement, you have to have finished 10 credit hours or 15 units of renewal credit within the past 5 years before reinstatement. The forms located above can be used for reinstatement as well.
