How to Renew or Reinstate a Teachers License in New York
Renewal of Teaching Certification
Once you have your Initial License, you have 5 years to complete the conditions for a Professional License. This includes mentoring during your first year, plus gaining at least two more years of teaching experience during these 5 years. You can also reach the Professional level through obtaining a master’s degree in your area of initial licensure from a graduate-level teacher preparation program.
Your Professional License is good indefinitely so long as you maintain the PD standards of the NYDOE during each 5-year block. This includes finishing 175 hours of PD every 5 years. The New York public school that you are employed at you will approve your PD hours and report them to the DOE. Your school has to also keep a record of your PD hours for seven years in the event of an audit.
You can apply for renewal online.
Teaching Certification Reinstatement
If you do not finish 175 hours of PD every 5 years, your teaching license can be revoked. You can request an extension of your license under certain circumstances. You can apply for an extension online.
If you need to pursue reinstatement, you will be required to pay an expiation fee and complete the necessary PD hours to bring your license back into good status. Contact the New York State Education Department Office of Teaching Initiatives at 518-474-3901 for more info.
