How to Renew or Reinstate a Teachers License in Mississippi
Renewal of Teaching Certification
Your Mississippi teaching license is good for 5 years, at which time it has to be renewed. Between renewals, you have to complete Continuing Education Units (CEUs – listed at the bottom of this webpage), college coursework or become National Board certified to keep your license active and renewed.
If you possess a standard Class A teaching license, you have to complete:
- 10 CEUs in your content area, OR
- 3 credit hours of college coursework in your content area plus 5 CEUs in your content area, OR
- 6 credit hours of college coursework in your content area, OR
- Be certified via the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards
If your teaching license is Class AA, AAA, or AAAA, you have to complete:
- 3 credit hours of college coursework in your content area, OR
- 5 CEUs in your content area, OR
- Be certified via the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.
You can renew your teaching license online through the Educator Licensure Management System (ELMS).
Teaching Certification Reinstatement
If your 5-year teaching license has lapsed, you can reinstate it by completing one of the following options:
- 6 credit hours of college coursework in your content area, OR
- Possess a good out-of-state teaching license or license, OR
- Show documentation from PERS if you are a retired teacher, OR
- Finalize the correct number of CEUs for your licensure class
