How to Become an Education Administrator in Hawaii

The Hawaii Educator Standards Board (HTSB) does not carry responsibility for licensure of school education administrators. The Hawaii Department of Education handles the licensure of school education administrators.
Academic Obligations
Must have a master’s degree in Educational Administration or Leadership.
Assessments
No Assessments are necessary for school leadership licensure in Hawaii.
Classroom Teaching Experience Requirements
Must have at least 5 years of school experience, with at least 3 of those years of full-time teaching experience.
Document and Application Requirements
Before applying for any professional school leadership positions in Hawaii, you must acquire the Vacancy Announcement and Applicant Selection Criteria from the Educational Officer Recruitment Department of the Hawaii Department of Education. They may be reached at (808) 586-3242. If you meet the minimum obligations for the position, you must submit the Application for Professional Leader’s Position.
- Suppose you do not currently work for the Hawaii Department of Education or are not a licensed Hawaii educator. In that case, you must submit official institution transcripts showing that you have attained the degree necessary for the position.
- You must also submit 3 letters of professional recommendation/reference.
- Send all of the above info to: Hawaii State Department of Education, Office of Human Resources, Educational Officer Recruitment, P.O. Box 2360, Honolulu, HI 96804-2360.
- After receiving your application and supporting materials, a committee will summon you for an interview and your credentials will be evaluated.
Background Check Requirements
A criminal history background check is not needed for Hawaii’s educational leadership licensure. However, suppose you answer “yes” to certain professional fitness queries on the license application form. In that case, you may be required to submit to a background check or provide other materials after your application is reviewed.
